  15. Secord Makes A Deal

  17. <p>    Less than a week before he was scheduled to face trial on
  18. felony charges relating to his activities in the Iran-contra
  19. scandal, Richard Secord copped a plea. The retired Air Force
  20. Major General admitted that he had lied to congressional
  21. investigators when he denied knowing that $13,800 from the Iran
  22. arms-sales deal went to pay for a security system at Oliver
  23. North's home.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>    "I wanted to prevent further criticism of Colonel North and
  26. myself," he explained to a judge. "There had already been a
  27. fire storm in the press. I was trying to shield both of us."
  28. Though Secord won dismissal of eleven other counts lodged by
  29. independent counsel Lawrence Walsh in exchange for the plea
  30. bargain, he could be sentenced to a $250,000 fine and five years
  31. in prison.
